Coffee Table Book

Coffee Table Book

Although quite a time-consuming project, I learned much from creating a full-length coffee table book. The topic was that of the art of old book design; I've been fascinated by antique books since I inherited a portion of my grandmother's collection a few years ago. All photographs were staged and taken by me. Books were researched and paired, to the best of my ability, with additional materials based on their publication date or general era. Included here are a handful of spreads from different sections of the book.

Children's Book Series

For me, this was a somewhat sentimental project, as I chose to redesign my grandfather's childhood book set written by Thornton W. Burgess and illustrated by Harrison Cady. There are many additional titles in the series, but these were the particular copies he owned. While I love the original style (see final image), I opted for a flatter, cut paper look that hearkens back to the original covers by maintaining the duotone illustration style. For the color palette, I chose variations on the primaries to reflect early childhood. I've also included the rough sketches from which I based each illustration.
